Unemployment Insurance: Under Control, But What about the Future
Unlike other human resource management issues, unemployment insurance (UI) management issues have a direct impact on an organization's tax liability, and since taxes reduce profitability, on its bottom line. Team Synergy: How to Harness Collective Intelligence to Maximize Individual Skills and Talents for Powerful Results
It has been said that business is moving from the Age of Competition to the Age of Collaboration. Synergy is the next level of effectiveness beyond mere collaboration. Organizations composed of synergistic teams are resilient, powerful, creative, and effective. Organizations clearly need fresh creative ideas constantly to stay competitive, to create new markets, to gain and retain new clients, and to be respected in the capital markets. But at a time of massive global economic uncertainty, and a "bunker mentality" present in many organizations, the very creativity and intuition needed to bring new solutions and fresh ideas is often squelched by the drone of stress and desperation. Ground-breaking work done over the past 25 years at HeartMath, an innovative research and training center near Silicon Valley, has shaped new understandings of the roots of creativity and intuition and how to increase their presence in our lives. Bruce Cryer's 20-year association with the Stanford Business School and extensive work with clients on four clients, has led to the development of key principles for developing creativity and intuition.

HR Metrics: Strategic Issues
Effective HR metrics are not developed in a vacuum. The "right or best" metrics require a detailed understanding of your organization: how it generates revenue, its business strategies and objectives, it business imperatives, the risks it faces, the opportunities to be seized, and what it already measures. Thus, HR metrics should not be developed in a silo or owned exclusively by human resources. To be of value, HR metrics should measure the business factors that are important to the organization -not just HR -and should be co-owned by HR and the C-suite, other departments, and line managers. The right or best metrics are HR metrics that incorporate the input of stakeholders and contribute to informed decision-making. From this perspective, HR metrics should be predictive and action oriented. HR metrics that do not assist organizational decision making are of little value. The issue is not the number of metrics. As Albert Einstein noted: "Everything that counts can't be measured and everything that can be measured does not count."

Project Management in Human Resources
Planning is everything - and ongoing. On one thing all Project Management texts and authorities agree: The single most important activity that project managers engage in is planning - detailed, systematic, team-involved plans are only the foundation for project success. And when real-world events conspire to change the plan, project managers must make a new one to reflect the changes. So planning and re-planning must be a way of life for project managers.
